Prioritizing connection in Concord Academy’s distance-learning schedule

Concord Academy recognizes that a primary objective of distance learning in this unprecedented moment is connection—to each other and to our community as a whole. Our academic schedule balances asynchronous work with weekly synchronous meetings but also includes other opportunities for community touchpoints. We have maintained in our schedule a daily meeting—a community meeting or chapel (senior talk) that the whole community logs into. We have also dedicated time for office hours and team and PE meetings, and our one-on-one advisor system will continue. Lunch is also on the schedule although we know that with our students living around the world, not everyone will be eating then. Nonetheless, this is a time when students and adults can host meetings for the community—class meetings, club meetings, book discussions, etc. to create touchpoints. As a boarding school, we plan to offer the occasional evening event as well—a Friday night open mic, for example. Students and teachers have helped us to develop connection points across the schedule: their creative ideas to maintain connection demonstrate the strength of Concord’s relational spirit!
