Frogs Delivered to Your Door

How can a science student get hands-on lab experience during e-learning? What if they could do a dissection at home, with the teacher instructing in real time via Zoom? At University High School of Indiana, we recognized in transitioning to e-learning, we’d need to deliver physical course materials to students with limited internet access. This evolved into teachers sending project kits home. Wearable Design students received patterns, tools, and materials to design and build shoes at home. Technical Theatre students got felt to make puppets. And Zoology students got frogs dissection kits delivered to their doorstep. Hourly employees like bus drivers delivered materials to students’ homes using routes optimized in RouteXL. While the initial delivery took about 35 hours, later pushes will be quicker, with just a few students getting deliveries each week.
